I’m excited to share another process diary with y’all.
I find such abundance in making collages. It’s a delight to discover an image, material or color that inspires a new piece. I deeply enjoy getting in lost in the brush strokes or obsessing over the angle of a piece of tape. Taking photos of my progress allows me to appreciate all the steps and mis-steps that made the work possible. And, of course, it’s a joy to realize that even when I’m “finished,” I can always revise again later. Creating collages in this way has begun to liberate me from all kinds of frameworks that no longer serve me.
One of my favorite parts of this particular collage was figuring out how to create the illusion of “tears” for the textual background. You’ll see what I mean when you scroll down. I surprised myself with quite a few choices. Another joy in making collages is that I start with an idea or inspiration — usually driven by one key component — and then I just go with it and see where the vibe takes me.
“I’ll Give You Something To Cry About”
beautiful use of color and mark making and as a complete piece too…i’m an illustrator/artist and haven’t been able to create much at all since about march 2019. your collage work is an inspiring reminder that there is a path to making visual work that can be loose and find its form or voice via the act of creation/doing. not completely sure this makes sense in words though? thank you for shaking something good loose in me, even if my words might be sliding all around themselves.
This is just absolutely beautiful. Wow. The "something to cry about" background is really where I, as a mere viewer, went, OH YES YES YES. Thank you for sharing the process!
